AT Gallaudet University, students and faculty have been protesting the selection of Jane K. Fernandes as president of the school - because she isn't deaf enough.
Gallaudet is one the nation's premier universities for deaf people - and Fernandes has been deaf her entire life. But apparently some deafness is "more equal than others" - and Fernandes didn't learn to "sign" until the age of 23. She preferred speaking - which, incredibly, is considered a liability.
One could expect such nonsense from students. But the faculty, much to its discredit, endorsed their mentality with a "no-confidence" vote.
It is bad enough that one must be deaf - regardless of other qualifications - to qualify for a job at a university that serves a deaf population. That one must also be a "certain kind" of deaf is absurd.

Public Relations is the name of the game....

After watching the final open forum with Dr. Jane Fernandes, I winced in pain as each person stood up and ripped into her. It was not what I wanted to see and Ms. Jonas put it perfectly, this whole thing “is such a travesty”.
I started to think about what it means to be deaf in the 21st century. LOL. I’m kidding, that’s not what I was planning to say but it is somewhat related. I will elaborate.
The Failure of Dr. Fernandes in mastering Public Relations is probably what got her into this situation in the first place. Never underestimate the power of the “buying public”. They can literally make you or break you (brands and products included). If you have enough people going around with big mouths to say that your product is crap, you better believe that everyone is going to think your product is crap. Regardless of how well you publicize it (take a lesson from Ford, the American made motor company that is losing millions each year)…
Jane should have pumped up her public relations machine full of steroids after the goalpost incident to avoid a fallout with the students. Did she honest to god think that the students would have conveniently forgotten this? NO WAY! While we may remember and talk about rumors for weeks and watch them wither away, we cannot forget when we feel we were wronged. We do not forget faces and we certainly do not forget names.
She should have started a feel-good campaign to win over faculty ESPECIALLY after I. King Jordan’s mistake (which he is only finally admitting now that it’s convenient?!) of appointing her without consulting with the afflicted. Instead, she made enemies not friends. She did not recognize the key players on the gallaudet team and aim to win them over. This probably would have prevented a lot of serious faculty dissent.
Now kiddies, here we are. 10 days into the protest and yet again another failure of public relations. If Jane was a PR mastermind or had hired one (like Clinton did *James Carville, where are you when we need you?*), she would not have ANY OF THESE PROBLEMS.
And, this, my friends is the main problem. Because as the Leader of Gallaudet, this is perhaps your most pivotal function…Public Relations. So, if you can’t prove that you can win over your very own people…HOW IN THE WORLD are you going to do your job effectively?
You can say this is all about her ineffective leadership and whatever else we can think of. But the bottom line is that where Jane Fernandes Failed miserably…

1. I never asked anyone to post my post on anyones blog. However, much to my amusement, it was. I AM DISGUSTED THAT SOME PEOPLE HAVE TAKEN THEIR ACTIONS TOO FAR. I am sure that the kaftan's daughter is absolutely gorgeous. that is offensive and stupid to even mention anything.
2. I really like Jane Fernandes and i really LOVE LOVE her husband Jim Fernandes. It is a shame that this all had to happen. But, HOW could this have been prevented? I wonder....

3. Anthony Mowl, don't you remember i told you several weeks ago that if you are planning to oppose a certain appointment that you should start making PLANS for that? You opted out of my "obviously fabulous advice" and as a result the media has depicted this protest as nothing short of a personal vendetta/sham. I'm not going to say "i told you so" (because i know i am already saying it anyway) and i cannot blame you for being naive enough to believe that the system will work.

Chris and Allison Kaftan Shoot eachother in the foot

Exposing the truth on both sides? Hardly. I’m actually quite disappointed because I find that once in a while Allison’s writings are amusing and somewhat logical. As for CK (whom I blogged about a few months back), he leaves much to be desired.
You say you support the FSSA and then you go on to demoralize the movement by making statements like “tent city is a farce”, “gallaudet community shoots itself in the foot”, “emotionally violent protest”.
Someone couldn’t go to their internship, Kendall students’ normal routines were disrupted, and you struggled to get your sick daughter off campus. I can see these being the normal casualties of a protest. You write it as if IT’S SO OUT OF THE ORDINARY and “EMOTIONALLY VIOLENT”…please.
You said people feared for their safety…FROM WHAT? Students playing video games and chess? And if you claim that they aren’t doing much, then how can you claim that they are wreaking so much havoc?
Students went to Jane K. Fernandes’s HOUSE?! Can someone tell me where she lives because I certainly don’t know and I doubt any of the protesters do either. I am very skeptical about this sketchy piece of information that you BOLDLY CLAIM.
You said that Ridor attacked Jane Norman, Ben Lewis, and some others. WHY ARE YOU ACTING LIKE THIS IS SO OUT OF THE ORDINARY and ONLY APPLICABLE TO THE PROTEST???
For the record, RIDOR has attacked EVERYONE and THEIR MOTHER at one point or another. This is hardly a cause for mention. (Btw- if you are interested in everyone Ridor has talked about *which is a boatload of TITANIC proportions, check it out at www.ridorlive.com*)

I find the grad student-freshman incident that you claimed to have witnessed ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS. For this reason…Doesn’t everyone want more supporters on their side? Jane Norman also did this for the GFA. EVERYONE WANTS MORE SUPPORTERS, I mean again…casualty of protesting.
Of course everyone is getting pressure…this is a divisive issue. OF COURSE the administration is pressuring fac and staff, just like students are pressuring students and so on and so forth. I don’t see what the big point here is…..(other than its boo-hoo sob sob “hurting the deaf community”)
Deaf-Centered does NOT NOT mean born DEAF of DEAF. I really wish that someone would explain this to people who are obviously disillusioned.
I personally do not get how the “Gallaudet For All” people are any different than the people who are protesting (other than being on opposite sides of the same coin).
Have you seen the diverse mix of people in tent city? If that isn’t from “all walks of life” then I don’t know what is. It’s nice to see that Gallaudet is “for all”… but lets be honest here, isn’t that how it’s always been?
When I was a student, there were people from ALL WALKS of LIFE there. I mean come on, this is hardly a revolution.

Anything is POSSIBLE and the last time I checked the Board has the ultimate authority to make decisions…Even complicated and unprecedented decisions. They are ULTIMATELY responsible for the university. When the Board fails, Gallaudet fails. PERIOD.

I DISAGREE. It’s a disservice to make a mockery of the very cause you support. You can point out these things have happened, but you also have to point out that there is always a price to pay for social justice. ALWAYS.
I HOWEVER AGREE with Julie that things are evolving naturally. That bothers me just a tad because I believe in planning. (see next post for my comments)
Now, I’m actually tired of all the protest bashing at DeafDC.Com. Especially the Kerry-esque ramblings of Adam Stone (who I probably would like if I ever met him in person)…
Speaking of DeafDC.com, they definitely need to upgrade those shitty ’95 servers they are running on because the site is impossible to load and sometimes it doesn't at all. I am thankful once in a while that they are preventing me from being exposed to some irrational irrhetoric. But still… I’m a drama addict. I want my fix when i want it, i want it to load when i want it to. argh.

MISS DEAF TEXAS is DEAD!

THIS IS SCARY - Miss Deaf Texas was Hit by a train TODAY! Apparently she was trying to cross the train tracks even though it wasn't a train crossing...I wonder why so many deaf people i know or have heard of died by train. Its like some kind of weird phenomenon, i would think you could feel the tracks trembling from a good 100 feet and if you are quick enough you should be able to cross in time before the train hits you. Regardless, this is a sad day for deaf america and deaf texans especially. My thoughts are with you all....
Thank you Jason Lamberton for reminding me about the MBTI, we use it alot in corporate america to make teams copacetic. Jason found a website where you can take the test and figure out your personality type...

the day is almost over and i am finally checking LJ. I am elated for some strange reason, i guess it is being towards the end of the day.
DONT YOU HATE MISSING PEOPLE?! I JUST HATE HATE HATE IT. Like when friends move away, get new jobs, new responsibilities, or they become completely inaccessible somehow someway? it totally sucks. Maybe i have a hard time accepting change? I think i need to read that book "Who Moved My Cheese"...yeah that sounds good.
There isn't really much happening here, i'm going to start my dance aerobics in front of my TV tonight after i finish making taco salad for dinner. I got mexican jalapeno chips that i am looking forward to mixing in these babies! i can just TASTE it now and its driving me wild.
I completed ONE thing on my 5 Thing TO DO list today, don't i feel productive?! :)
I also hate the fact that theres no bachelor on tonite, i miss watching that show. I bought the American Idol seasons 1-4 DVD and it TOTALLY SUCKS! the editing is HORRIBLE and so is the sound (and this is not because i am deaf, trust me, the sound is awful)... i am actually going to take it back to walmart and demand a refund.
Today on the ipod, i almost cried. I love Journey's FAITHFULLY...

We were in willmar, minn last weekend at the 'rents lakehouse which was serene (as serene as it can be with my mother haha!) and we got a chance to catch up on sleep and just generally vacationing which is ALWAYS WELCOME! :)
There are 28k people who live in willmar and yet their grocery store is 3 times as big as the hyvee here in sioux falls, and 10 times better! some things just really piss me off. the liquor store up there even carries beer from far away countries. amazing.
Me and ma got into a heated debate about abortion. we're both prochoice and mom thinks that its time for me to change my party affiliation (i'm a republican). she thinks that bush has single-handedly created the worst possible prochoice battle in history. She truly believes that because of south dakota, roe v. wade will be overruled. she asks when i am moving out. soon enough, i tell her, soon enough.
CAN YOU IMAGINE the government forcing you to endure a full pregnancy term? That seems so...none of the government's damn business.
why do we allow fundamentalists to practice their religion in the legislature? even governer mike rounds said that his catholic faith had some influence. this is such a crock. i'm not against any religion but just remember that what you believe cannot be forced upon everyone else.
We had a severe winter advisory and drove back home through freezing rain, snow, and severe winds. No sliding off the road and we were only stuck behind what appeared to be a drunk/methed up driver only once. for a good 25-30minutes. ugh. but we made it and now we're home.
oh oh when we were at willmar, i was watching VH1's "Driven" on Kanye West, WOW. i think i have a more profound respect for him than i did before. i found him to be quite egotistical at the grammy awards but now that i've seen the background on what happened, i'm pretty impressed at how determined he was to make it as a rapper. one of the main things i always liked about him....HIS LYRICS ROCK! so i'm posting "Jesus Walks" here for y'all...

Most of y'all know i play a lil poker here and there... i joined a womens league locally in sioux falls which ran for 8 weeks, grand prize was an all expense paid trip to vegas to play in the LIPS (Ladies International Poker Series) tourney. <http://www.lipstour.com>
For 8 weeks I went and got buzzed on Boulevard and had fun with the locals, even the woman who owned the bar was in our league (about 30 of us altogether), bud light sponsored it so every week ther were prizes for 1st place (2 games a night)...it was based on a points system. 500 points gets you into the final tournament and most of 'em gals had over 500, alot of them over 1k! i had juts 500 points ON THE NOSE. i went in sick and high on benadryl and comtrex (i was very sick all week) and basically i decided that iwas going to win this thing before it even started.
AND THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am going to vegas, may 18-21st. The tournament is on the 20th, i'm pretty sure it will be held at binions horseshoe but the location hasn't been announced yet (i wonder why)....The winner will receive an entry into the Ladies WSOP (1k buy in) and 5 seats on the LIPS TOUR (various locations across the US '06-'07.
Naturally, i was shocked but not really all that shocked because i played a pretty flawless game (other than the bad beat i took when my friend JD got her flush on the river against my AceKing top pair *should i have put her all in on the flop? should she have folded her a7 spades?*)
Regardless, I beat her ass on the river which was satisfying to say the least. if you want to know heres how it played out...YES VERY DRAMATIC

JD: mulls over it for a good three minutes...CALLS!

The new league winner gets a day spa, we'll see if i can snag that.
